About

Most recently I worked on a very remote indigenous community in western Australia providing one on one photographic tuition and guidance to young men with a history of drug abuse. The main goals of the project was to teach the art of photographic story telling and to produce a commercially viable body of work to be shown locally and interstate. The great success of the project was a testament to the commitment of the young men involved and their want to see the world in a new way.

For some participants photography was a way for them to express what they could not verbally while for others the art filled a void in their lives left behind from their drug abuse.

For three years I worked as a tour guide in Central Australia which enabled me to spend countless hours in some of the most spectacular landscapes Australia has to offer. Recently my photographic knowledge of Central Australia has been getting a work out on the WAYOUTBACK.com photographic tours which have been an amazing experience and a new avenue to explore.

Over the last four years I have also been working as a freelance event and commercial photographer working with some of Alice Springs's most respected business and organisations including R M Willams magazine, Peta Appleyard Gallery, Desert Knowledge CRC, DesArt, Melbourne Age, Red Hot Arts, Lasseters Hotel and Casino, numerous Government Departments, CaptOvate Media, Creative Territory and Alice Solar City to mention a few.

Gear

I use Canon gear and have invested much time and money making sure that my equipment is of a professional standard so that I can provide an appropriately level of service. My main camera is a 5D MKII which produces spectacularly rich 21 megapixel photographs and my lineup of lenses is also all Canon. I carry a 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 24-70 f/2.8L, 17-40 f/4L and the 50mm 1.4 to all of my shoots as these lenses are my bread and butter.

Also in my line up is a full range of highly mobile lighting equipment so that I can take control of the fine lighting details to produce photographs with punch anywhere the client needs. Multiple remote controlled flash units, reflectors, soft boxes, umbrellas, backgrounds and rigging gear are a must have for those money shots and these items have getting a workout on my recent jobs.

Film, yes film and big film at that, my current camera of choice for my personal work is a medium format Mamiya RB 67. This camera makes 6x7cm negatives and uses the 120 film format which is around 4x the size of a standard 35mm negative. This camera has no electronics at all and no automatic modes it is a pure mechanical camera which has taught me so much about the true meaning of photography. Every detail of the photographic process from exposure, focusing and depth of field to developing the negatives is a manual process in which every frame exposed costs money. Attention to detail in every respect to the process is totally necessary. More from this in the near future.
